The Mizoram state has an area of 21087 square kilometers with a population 8, 91,058 with male population of 459783 and female population of 431275 according to 2001 Census and a density of population of 42 persons per square kilometers. TOBACCO CESSATION CLINIC, CIVIL HOSPITAL - AIZAWL

Introduction :TCC Aizawl was established by the Health & Family Welfare Department of Mizoram with fund received from the WHO. It was formally inaugurated at Civil Hospital, Aizawl by the Hon’ble Health Minister Pu R. Tlanghmingthanga on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), 31st May 2005. It was set up in the 2nd Phase along as part of 5 TCCs making the total of 18 TCC in the Country. The clinic functions from 1st June 2005 onwards.
Objectives : i) To organize anti-tobacco awareness training programmes with the help of NGO’s working in the area.
ii) To provide tobacco cessation through clinical services
iii) To expand networking activities via establishing more satellite Sub-centres in and around Aizawl.
Services Offered :The clinic is established at Civil Hospital, Aizawl in an easily accessible location of Laboratory Building. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, two TCC staffs comprising of Clinical Psychologist and Medical Social Worker are available during the OPD hours from Monday to Saturday. The clinic has been visited by people from all walks of life who wanted to abstain from their habits of tobacco consumption. The following services are available in the clinic:
a) Behavioral Counseling

b) Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
c) Carbon Monoxide Monitoring
d) Outreach Activities

Total number of clients (1st June 2005 to 31st May 2008) = 2213
Total number of male clients = 1390
Total number of female clients = 823

B. Awareness and Sensitization Activities:

C. Observation of World No Tobacco Day: World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31st May every year with a variety of activities and well-publicized programmes. Essay writing, Painting, Song writing, TV Spot, Radio Jingle, Drama, Rock (Group) Music and Anti Tobacco marathon competitions are organized. Local celebrities (who do not use tobacco) were also invited in order to have a more innovative program. The level of participation from the students and the general public is very satisfactory. The good response from the public may all be attributed to the attractive prizes for each item. The day is symbolically observed by organizing public gatherings, where popular artistes of the state are hired to entertain the audience. Street preaching is held at popular public places. The day is observed also in all the district headquarters of Mizoram.
