1. Name of the Programme : Prevention of Food Adulteration
2. Objectives/Targets : To ensure the availability of food that are hygienic and safe, educate the public about their rights to food safety, check and inspect to prevent food adulteration and prohibit the sale of unsafe and sub-standard food.
3. Physical and Financial achievement during the last 5 years from the initiation of the programme :
(a) The 2(two) Vacant posts of Food Inspector have been filled up and the FIs have undergone the mandatory three (3) months programme on Food Inspection and sampling works under the guidance of Public Analyst of State Public Health Laboratory, Assam.
(b) The Government of Mizoram has issued a gazette notification for authorization of various functionaries as prescribe under the PFA Act & Rules.
(c) The FIs have conducted inspection in the markets, in food manufacturing units and in various food service establishment such as Hotels, restaurants, Tea stalls and fast food outlets.
(d) Have issued provisional PFA licence for seven (7) food manufacturers.

5. Innovation (If any) :
(a) Conducted two (2) separate awareness campaign on PFA for –
- Mizoram Consumer’s Union & Food Business Operators (Importers, whole sellers, retailers & Dealers) and
- Food Service establishment Owners (Hotels, Restaurants, Tea stall & Fast Food) and Bakery owners.
(b) Issued three (3) separate notice in public interest regarding sales of imported food
items, junk foods and edible oils.
6. Factors enhancing the implementation of the programme :
Fund provided by the State Government.
7. Constraints if any :
(a) Insufficient Man-power.
(b) Ignorance of various functionaries regarding their respective duties as prescribed
under the PFA Act & Rules.
(c) Poor Allocations of Funds.
(d) Non-availability of State Public Health Laboratory and a Public Analyst.
8. Recommendations/Suggestions :
(a) To quicken the pace of the negotiations with the Govt. of Assam for the utilization
of their State Public Health Laboratory by the Government of Mizoram.
(b) Provide sufficient fund for generating awareness on safe food through campaigns,
training, mass media etc. and for lifting food samples.
(c) Provision for mobility of Food Inspector for prompt and speedy action in their field
works.
(d) Enforce PFA license in the whole State for all Food Business Operators such as
manufacturers, stockers, imported, dealers, sellers and hawkers as prescribed under
Rule 50 of the PFA Rules, 1955.
